Mario Kart 64

(written January 28th 2007)

Mario Kart 64 is an excellent game. It all started in when Super Mario Kart was released on the SNES. Then we got the Nintendo64 version, which is now avalable for download int the Virtual Console. Mario Kart is also released on GBA, GameCube and DS.

You can play up to 4 players and you use the Classic Controller. If you don't have that, you can also use a GameCube controller or a mix of both. In 1 player you can choose between Mario Grand Prix or Time Trails. In 2 player you have the addition of VS mode. And in 3 & 4 player you got a Battle mode, but no Mario GP.

In both Mario GP and VS. mode, you can choose between 3 classes; 50 cc, 100 cc and 150 cc. You have 8 players to choose from: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, D.K., Wario abd Browser. You then select what map to play. There are 4 maps with 4 tracks in each. So it's a total of 16 tracks to play + the battle tracks. You got the following Cups:

Mushroom Cup: Luigi Raceway, Moo Moo Farm, Koopa Troopa Beach, Kalimari Desert
Flower Cup: Toad's Turnpike, Frappe Snowland, Choco Mountain, Mario Raceway
Star Cup: Wario Stadium, Sherbet Land, Royal Raceway, Browser's Castle
Special Cup: D.K.'s Jungle Parkway, Yoshi Vally, Banshee Boardwalk, Rainbow Road

Battle tracks: Big Donut, Block Fort, Double Deck, Skyscaper.

In Time Trails you can race each track against the clock and you can try it out with different players since they all play different. So there is much to do. With all the different tracks, classes and modes.  The only thing that misses, is that you can't save Ghost Data. But I hope Nintendo will fix this, since all the N64 emulator out there can.

This is a very fun game and I have to say, it's a must have title in your VC collection. If you don't own the N64 version, download it.
